St. Vincent Health

Looking toward the future, St. Vincent General Hospital District has embraced the concept of a health campus where specialists, primary care, Lake County Public Health Agency, and other health-related offices reside in the old hospital building and synergistically complement services in the adjacent, new hospital facility.

Steve Mercado

St. Vincent Foundation Director

Steve Mercado is the director of the nonprofit St. Vincent Health Foundation, heading up fundraising and “friendraising” in support of St. Vincent Health in collaboration with the St. Vincent Health Foundation Board of Directors. He is firmly rooted in the community and brings an enduring, personal and comprehensive perspective to his role with the organization.

Born in Steamboat Springs, Steve and his family moved to Leadville when he as just a toddler when his father began work at the Climax Mine. He’s an alumnus of Lake County High School. Steve earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from Arizona State University, and then lived in Denver for a 30-year career in telecommunications. A decade ago, he moved back to Leadville to care for family.

“Working as a caregiver reignited my internal flame to hear my calling. Volunteering, and being of service to others, have always been my passion,” says Steve. “In my role I can make a difference for those in need and have a larger voice to help.”

Steve’s responsibilities include executing events for St. Vincent, donor and volunteer relations, grant writing and continued fundraising for new medical equipment.

He believes that listening, understanding and showing results are essential in his work, and he admires the grit and persistence of the Lake County community.

“Watching our hospital over the years, go from near closure to becoming a driving force again, has been powerful. Seeing the support and faith of the community and staff who never gave up—always providing stellar care not knowing if they would have a job the next day,” he says. “They cared deeply and went above and beyond. Those who helped get through the tough years should be recognized and commended. I’m excited to do my part to continue the positive trend.”

When Steve isn’t engaged in his foundation work, you’ll likely find him enjoying the outdoors, playing guitar, painting, helping his elderly neighbors or cooking for friends and family.
